DAD & DAUGHTER APP IS ADDING UP ; Calculator tops Kindle chart with 1m downloads [Eire Region] [Mirror (UK)](Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AN Irish father and daughter team have developed an app which rocketed to the top of the Amazon Kindle charts. Calculator Plus, invented by Aidan and Isabel Hughes, has now clocked up a staggering one million downloads. It is the No1 calculator app for the Kindle Fire tablet in the US and UK as well as the second-highest rated in all categories out of 64,878 apps on Amazon's Android App Store. USA Today recently named the creation as one of their 25 essential Kindle Fire apps and Amazon are pre-installing it in all of their shop demo models across America. Aidan and Isabel's Windows 8 version, Calculator Free, is already the most downloaded calculator on that platform after just a month. This is a second success for Dubliner Aidan, 41, and his 13-year- old daughter who have also invented a easy way to work with fractions. Fraction Calculator was conceived by the pair while Isabel was doing her maths homework. Aidan, originally from Raheny, said: "After a page of checking answers to fraction problems we were both exhausted. "I knew there had to be a better way and I thought of a fraction calculator with three keypads that would be fast and easy." Fraction Calculator was recently released on the Amazon Kindle Fire where it rapidly rose to the No1 paid calculator spot and has been in the top five since. Aidan added: "The beauty of the new Calculator Plus app is that it remembers everything you calculate. Again it came from Isabel and I bemoaning the fact that you lose everything when you turn a calculator off." Aidan started in computing when he was just 12, programming a baking game for his brother Kevin who suffers from epilepsy. After leaving school early he got a job at a firm where his first task was putting Irish plugs on US computer cords. But by the age of 20 Aidan was the senior programmer at the firm. He later started Digital Alchemy and went on to create software for Irish firms, the Irish Government, the UN and various US software companies. He joined Microsoft in 1999 as a software developer in Seattle. Calculator Plus is available here for smartphones from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
